A report commissioned by the NHS advocates that the current complement of 50 Clinical Librarians be eventually increased to 800. Also, that the focus in NHS libraries shift to knowledge workers – with an increase in the recruitment of Knowledge Service Librarians.
In effect, this would see a major transformation of Health libraries in the UK from the 20th Century service-delivery model to a model where most staff are working ‘in the field’, directly with clinicians, or in developing cutting-edge knowledge and collaborative technologies.
The full report can be downloaded by going to http://www.library.nhs.uk/aboutnlh/review
It would be interesting to receive comments on this from clinical librarians and Health library staff generally.
